Fishy Elephant and Donkey Music

September 5, 2008

I was wondering about the musical selections played at the conventions. The funniest most surprising one that I heard was “Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer played after Bill Clinton’s speech….

When I heard Heart’s Barracuda played at the Elephant-in-the-Room convention I thought it effective but ironic and today Heart released a very clear and strong statement that they basically don’t want anything to do with the Elephant’s presumptuous use of the song.  Here is a quote from the Heart statement:

” The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.)”

And as sung in the song:  “If the real thing don’t do the trick, You better make up something quick.”

More colorful reporting about this over at Rolling Stone.

Remember when the Reagan campaign appropriated at length and repeatedly Springsteen’s Born in the USA  against his wishes…

Fun, dark, popishly bemused whilst deeply durable and moving.

A lot more “today” than Bush of Ghosts.
