Mr. Cleans Old Golf Balls
May 12, 2008
The genie of household filth ? Well, reports that he was more of sailor type makes sense when you contemplate his mysterious gold earing and whites which was part of the original character design going back to the ’50s. Mr. Clean continues on as a brand image which receives regular makeovers. He was the first guy I knew with an earring.
Mr. Clean’s theme song was with the product’s introduction, sung as a duet between one Don Cherry and one other Betty Bryan. Thomas Scott Cadden (1923-2007) wrote the jingle in ‘57, according to Wiki. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore. So snappy and clean with whipped cream eye brows.
The Age of Noise and Drones of Harmony
May 9, 2008Hey check this out. Great presence and SOUND-SUSPENSE. Really nice quality stream-drone and interesting visual accompaniment. Wow, this is in the Boston MA area. I will have to explore more but check this in the mean. I observed for many minutes: I was just certain a fabulous accident was imminent !
Counting Herring at the top of a fish ladder
May 9, 2008It is a 10 minute shift. You stare into the water focusing on the somewhat white board at the bottom of the top of the ladder. Don’t look away. Don’t wave at the passing vehicle on the one-at-a-time bridge to your left. Focus. Watch for a herring. Count. How many herring will cross the board. How many herring can make it up the ladder and be caught by your counting eyes. You are but one person of a volunteer pool of 50 or so people showing up at the ladder for a 10 minute shift. The herring use to swim up this small stream to lay their eggs before swimming back to the ocean. Herring population in the freshwater ways are nearly depleted in these parts. 10 minutes. Focus. Listen. Observe and document in the log.
Hey! Did you notice that the three images at the top of this post look different even though they are the same ? Optical/human perception illusion with the repetition and the white space. Did you see any herring? How would you know?
Iris Dement: know her stuff, you should.
May 7, 2008Had the chance to hear and see Iris Dement last weekend in historic Lexington MA. Wow, she is a rare talent: amazing song writer, truly unique voice and she has the potential to cross-over to a much larger “Indie” audience, beyond country. I was a bit surprised by the older skewed audience of few hundred at the performance. Yes, it was in a church in a burb but still it was an accessible location and I would have thought a wider audience would have been drawn in.
Listen. She has a strong pull toward the melancholy but there are some very bright songs and singing.

I actually “discovered” her as a soundtrack element of that TV show Northern Exporsure back in the mid 90’s. They had used a bit of what was here first “big” song “Our Town”. One of the amazing things about that song is that she elevated beyond cliche down into a familiar place that really hits the heart…
DJ Spooky at the ICA, Boston MA.
May 6, 2008This was snapped at his “talk” last winter, which consisted of a lot of sound examples and some interesting visuals. He flashed this one up in talking about what he is not about… Mr. Miller can talk. I like his ideas….Hey, I just remembered that he gave out a CD to everyone who went to the show. I’ll have to dig up a sample of it and post it soon.
Love The Good-n-Plenty Commercial - It Rocks !
May 4, 2008nude
May 1, 2008Hey, here is my remix of Radiohead’s song Nude this is Pinkletink’s mix.
Have you heard about what they did?
They made available tracks or stems from their actual song Nude. Nude is on their latest release In Rainbows ( isn’t “rainbow” a particularly pretty word to read? I was struck by that when I had to fortune to spell it during Scrabulous. I have cliched associations with the optical phenomena but spelling it out really has changed my life around. You know I think Lepre….).
Right. So, we remixed their song: Sir. Pipetop provided a haunting, if a bit pixilated, uilleann bagpipe riff, the pinkletinks added a nice location recording of their friends out about the bog and cohort managed to edit it all together while -tinnitus- drank black coffee while givin’ the chicken-eye-of-attention to all, like an attentive producer is prone to do. You can vote on it if you go over to the Radiohead website that is hosting all the “official” remixes. Off with you now: http://www.radioheadremix.com/remix/?id=2112
It’s a Wonderful Life! Or, finally getting around to bloggin’ stuff that has been piling up in me noggin’.
April 30, 2008Yes, I have a pair of these footballing shoes. I’m on my second pair. I don’t recall where exactly I bought them but I’m certain it was 1932.
People marvel when I wear them and when they mark up their Venetian tiled kitchen.
A similar shoe added a spring to George Bailey’s walk home with Mary after the infamous Charleston-into-the-pool scene.
Kick It !
